Acts – Life in the Spirit is a series of Sermons and Bible Studies.

After the day of Pentecost, the apostles and members of this new community continued to carry out the mission and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. They did so under the power of God’s Holy Spirit. Studying these “Acts” today teach us how to live as Christians in community – how to be the Church.

Recently, we talked about Elisha when he ask for a “double-portion” and openly declared that we, too, “Need Help!” If you will commit to the study, “Acts – Life in the Spirit” you will do more than declare your need for help, you will be walking full of the power of the Helper: the Holy Spirit.

I encourage you to be faithful in your attendance at Service each Sunday morning and join me in Bible Study each Wednesday evening but especially during the months of July and August for this important life-changing teaching.

Here’s the deal:

Nashville has experienced what experts are calling a “500 year flood.” The flood is of epic proportions. The Cumberland River which flows through the city crested at over 50 feet.

I am grateful to God that neither our church facility nor my home suffered any damage. I had some water in my unfinished basement which is comparatively insignificant.

It is confirmed that 19 people died from flood related incidents. Among the dead is Mr. Robert Woods 74, father of a high school classmate. Mr. Woods was well-known in his community and was a source of wisdom and strength for children and youth in his neighborhood. Of course, each of those whom Nashville has lost to the flood has their own stories and significance and relationships, but the entire community is diminished by losing them.

Over 20,000 people in Nashville and surrounding areas are without power. There are people still trapped in their homes while others are unable to return to their homes to try to see what belongings can be saved.

We are not sure yet just how many thousands of people have lost their homes. Many are salvaging what they can from their homes and surviving by living with family, friends or in shelters throughout the city.

There are serious concerns about water. One of our treatment plants has been flooded and the other just missed by one foot. In cities around Nashville, residents have been instructed to boil water before drinking.

It is estimated that 90% of persons whose homes have been damaged are without flood insurance. President Obama has approved federal disaster assistance, but it will be communities of faiths that will provide assistance in rebuilding lives and restoring hope. These Nashvillians desperately need our help! Additionally, we are aware of several church buildings damaged to the extent that it is not possible to worship inside

What can you do to help? PRAY for the people of Middle Tennessee and give MONEY! It is our mission to meet the emergent needs of our community. We have to be Christ for people who are suffering by providing for their needs.

Here is how your money will be used:

to help families with immediate, pressing needs

to feed hungry families and volunteers

to buy and distribute drinking water

to help repair churches damaged by the flood

Click the “DONATE”! button in the right column to make a contribution. Your contribution will make a difference.

Follow what’s going on in Nashville on Twitter by following these hashtags: #nashvilleflood and #othersituation2010

The Urban League of Middle Tennessee is celebrating its centennial by recommitting itself and advancing an agenda that supports progress for the next 100 years. The Centennial theme is I AM EMPOWERED which reminds everyone of the power of the individual to become a force for change by encouraging collective action to bring change to entire communities and urban areas. During this Centennial year, the Urban League asks Americans across the country to join in the Movement by signing its Centennial pledge. The Urban League is coming to ask for the support of your congregation. There is an effort to identify 100 churches in the metropolitan Nashville area that believe in the work of the Urban League, that will take the centennial pledge, support a city-wide Urban League Sunday, and make a financial investment that will help to advance its centennial goals.

Please consider being a part of this effort and signing the pledge. For more information, see the attached letter and sign up form. Click here for letter and form!

Did you know that African American men have a 60% higher prostate cancer incidence rate and a 150% higher death rate than all other men? This is the largest racial disparity for any type of cancer. To address this crisis Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) implemented a “Father’s Day Rally Against Prostate Cancer” and we will be joining their effort.
Join us each Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for our Bible Study:

TO KNOW CHRIST: The Seven “I AM” Sayings of Jesus from the Gospel of John

It is our purpose for the next seven weeks to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ by studying and meditating upon 7 definitive statements He made about Himself which shares a wealth about His identity and His desires and plans for us.

The Seven “I AM” Sayings of Jesus:

I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

Kairos is excited to be partnering with the Oasis Center and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to provide food and shelter to our sisters and brothers in Middle Tennessee.

Kairos is a wonderfully blessed church and we understand that our resources are maximized when we collaborate with organizations with proven results in serving people to whom we believe God has called us to minister: the hungry and the homeless.

The Oasis Center provides emergency shelter for youth who are in crisis. Of the 40 beds across Tennessee available to youth, 12 are provided by the Oasis Center. In addition to serving youth in crisis, the Oasis Center, through their College Connection, opens doors of opportunities to youth when they completed High School or GED programs.

The Oasis Center is quite a phenomenal serving organization and we are certain that as we support their work with our time, talent and treasure we are fulfilling the mission and ministry to which we have been called as Christians.

Poverty is wrecking havoc on the lives of too many Middle Tennesseans, robbing them of human dignity. God has given us the responsibility of restoring dignity to all of His children. We can help to do this by feeding the hungry.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is amazing. Simply put, our money goes farther to feed more and more hungry Middle Tennesseans when we partner with Second Harvest. 47% of the people who they serve are children. Children find it difficult, if not impossible, to grow and develop and achieve in school without proper nutrition. We bless children and build stronger communities across Middle Tennessee when we dedicate some of our time, talent and treasure to the work of this worthy organization.
